There are those in paintball who say the “big game” format is dead or dying, being replaced with woodsball tournaments or more complicated scenarios. Those people should re-evaluate their claims as we explore the Resident Evil game at Splat Tag and the 335 players who attended it this September.

Legend is such a subjective term, especially for a sport with a relatively short history. In two and a half decades paintball has evolved from buddies with unregulated marking pistols to machine gunning athletes and media outlets that direct their marketing to those living the “paintball lifestyle”—whatever that means. If brown is the new black, then scenario is the new tournament, and the 700 players who rode all manner of wings and wheels to CPX Sports outside Joliet, Illinois, converged to throw down with some great competition and a few of the movers and shakers who have shaped the course of the sport..

It was only ten minutes in, and Raymond Salas, leader of the Salas cell, knew he was in deep trouble. His Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) adversaries had wiped out the force moving on Center for Disease Control headquarters, posted snipers in several second story windows overlooking his position, and were also taking ground on his opposite flank. His drug runners and terrorist brethren swarmed back and forth from the respawn point faster than bees to and from their hive. Something needed to change, and soon, if he’d have any chance at completing the missions sure to come his way.
